When shooting football senior portraits we like our athletes to have that sweaty, rugged, “game day” look. Unfortunately, it’s not practical to schedule a photo shoot immediately following a game.
So, we fake it…
Our sneaky little technique is surprisingly simple: a cheap spray bottle full of water mixed with a few drops of baby oil or vegetable oil. Water, by itself, will evaporate too quickly—the oil helps to maintain the “sweaty” look and creates large droplets for reflecting light.
We also created our own eye-black smudges by burning the end of a wine bottle cork.
